Sega finally decided to pander to their fans, opting for a game design that provides a 3D adventure that relies on pure speed and spectacle above all else. The game does an amazing job of seamlessly switching between 2D and 3D perspectives. Allowing fans to enjoy scenes akin to those of Sonic Adventure.

Plus, the game never makes you engage in awkward combat which is truly a blessing. The gameplay within this title is a joy not only because of the 2D to 3D switches but also because of the challenge it provides.

It is almost like a Sonic the Hedgehog version of Trials: Fusion. Plus, in terms of visual effects, animations and overall presentation. We can say with some confidence that this was the best thing that franchise had produced for some time. The backdrops are stunning, the musical score is fast-paced and punchy. Plus, the way the game romanticises the older character sprites with 3D models that bring them into the modern-day gaming scene is wonderful.

Overall, Sonic Generations was the breath of fresh air that the franchise so desperately needed. The gameplay is challenging and addictive. The presentation is beautifully handled and the fan service through the use of nostalgia was an inspired decision. Fans may have had to wait way too long to play another great Sonic game but thankfully, the wait was worth it in the end. The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise was a huge success back on the Sega Genesis, but the series had a dip in quality during the early s.

Luckily, Sonic Generations looks to reverse that trend and reinforce Sonic as a leading brand in platforming gameplay. Created for the series 20th anniversary, Sonic Generations brings together both classic and modern Sonic gameplay for an explosive and speedy package of platforming fun. Featuring an abundance of Sonic characters, classic levels, and memorable music, this is one Sonic game that fans won't want to miss.

Whether you're a fan of the retro Sonic or have been hoping for a better modern Sonic game, Sonic Generations offers quite a bit of alluring content. Sonic Generations does its best to include every Sonic character of note, including multiple designs of the same characters. In this twisted tale, the villainous Eggman prepares a plot so dangerous that it threatens the very nature of time itself.

After coming across a powerful entity known as the Time Eater, Eggman travels back in time to finally defeat Sonic and his friends. Both titles feature high-speed Sonic stages, slower-paced "Werehog" levels, and town hubs where players must progress through the story. Differences Between Versions Although Sonic Unleashed was released on four different platforms, two different versions of the game exist: the "High-Def" version for the Xbox and Playstation 3, developed by Sonic Team, and the "Standard-Def" version for the Playstation 2 and Nintendo Wii, co-developed by Dimps Corporation.

Both versions of the game follow roughly the same story, but feature significant differences: All of the story-critical events in the Standard-Def version are pre-rendered videos of the High-Def version's real-time cutscenes. In the Standard-Def version, towns are relegated to a menu where you select different locations in the area in order to visit them and talk to characters.

In the Standard-Def version, you must click on every location on the map menu and talk to every NPC before progressing forward. The player eventually unlocks the ability to use a camera in the High-Def version of Sonic Unleashed, which can be used to exercise evil spirits from possessed NPCs. This mechanic is not present in the Standard-Def version. Sun and Moon medals are available to collect in each version of the game.

In the High-Def version, medals must be found and collected within towns and levels themselves and are used to open new levels as you progress through the game. In the Standard-Def version, medals are awarded for getting high ranks on levels and are used to unlock bonus content. Standard-Def Gaia Gates are stone temple areas that only contain level entrances, opened by using keys collected through talking to NPCs in the Town Menu.

Bonus levels can be discovered by exploring the High-Def version's Gaia Gates. Similar bonus levels are available in the Standard-Def version, but are available from a menu, and are unlocked as you collect medals or reach other progression milestones. Two continents were altered for the Standard-Def version of the game: Though you visit Mazuri to fight the Egg Beetle Boss, its associated level "Savannah Citadel" is not present in the Standard-Def version, and you never visit Empire City for any reason whatsoever.

In the High-Def version, Sonic gets one continuous "boost" meter that can be permanently extended by spending experience points earned over the course of the game. In the Standard-Def version, the boost meter is broken down in to segments, with each boost expending one individual segment.

The boost meter in the Standard-Def version is temporarily extended by collecting rings in each level, and gets reset after the stage is clear. Sonic's controls are a little more stiff in the Standard-Def version of the game, offering less fluidity but tighter steering. Though a single Werehog level in the High-Def version of the game can last for minutes or more, Werehog levels in the Standard-Def version are broken in to four shorter minute sub-levels that are all played one right after another.

In the High-Def version, the Werehog can run when the player holds down a button. In the Standard-Def version, running is initiated by double tapping a direction on the analog stick. While running, the Werehog is also a little more slippery in the Standard-Def version. In the High-Def version, players earn experience points via yellow gems dropped from defeated enemies.

Experience can be spent to either level up Sonic or the Werehog's different stats. Sonic's stats improve his Max Speed and Boost meter. In the Standard-Def version, only the Werehog can be upgraded, and experience points are spent automatically, with level-ups improving its stats without any choice from the player.

In the High-Def version, spending experience to upgrade the Werehog's "Combat Ability" will unlock 31 different special moves and combos to use during fights. In the Standard-Def version, there are only five of these special moves. Mostly stuff that no 3D Sonic game has managed to get right, including an annoyingly touchy camera, lame bosses, and an overabundance of deaths caused by falling off edges.

These issues seem almost endemic to the series at this point, but it'd be nice if a future update could clear 'em up. Still, don't let these quibbles or the hateful grumblings of the other reviewers deter you--Heroes is worthy. I could go on and on about how Sonic just doesn't work well in 3D, but it wouldn't change anything. He's here to stay. Thankfully, most of what made the Adventure games a bore--in particular, everything that didn't star Sonic or Tails--is gone, and as a result, Heroes plays more like the balls-to-the-wall Sega Genesis Sonics.

It's even got a classic-style casino stage, something that the previous 3D efforts didn't even dare to try. But for each brave step forward, it takes a few back. Racing full speed through stages that take 10 or more minutes to complete while constantly switching characters for the most mundane of tasks becomes exhausting.

It's even worse when you consider that you have to play through the same stages four times once with each team to get the real ending. I don't have the patience for it, especially when the terrible camera and hit-or-miss lock-on attacks that leave you plunging to your doom and spelled trouble in the last two Sonics still haven't been adequately addressed. Once at the forefront of platforming action, the Sonic series hasn't aged well. And while Heroes is better in some respects than the last two, it still leaves me disappointed.

For a character as recognizable and symbolic as Sonic the Hedgehog, you'd think Sega would spend a little more time polishing each of his adventures before shipping them to stores. Sadly, this is not the case. As with the previous two 3D Sonic outings, Sonic Heroes is a solid platformer that could've been a lot better if the developers had spent more time balancing the levels and tweaking the unbelievably frustrating camera. The team-based gameplay is interesting enough, but instead of having four separate teams, three of which play virtually identically, Sega should've just stuck with Team Sonic and focused on making it a more cohesive, enjoyable experience.

The one team that does play differently--the exploration-based Team Chaotix--isn't even fun, as Heroes' stages were clearly designed for speed, not adventuring. That said, it is nice to have a Sonic game with a bit of real depth to it. The venerable Sonic franchise is back, this time with a team approach to a 3D adventure world.

This certainly isn't the first time that Sega has tried to convert the excellent 2D speed scroller into a 3D game, but it is the first time they've done it right. Instead of muddying the waters with the bevy of Sonic-related characters that seem to multiply like bunnies in each game ' Sega divided up the characters into teams of three. Although the teams each have a unique look, they mostly play the same and have to take on the same challenges which in this game means once more defeating Dr.

Eggman and taking on a Mystery Monster. What makes this game work so much better than previous 3D Sonic games is that Sega has weeded out all of the clutter and concentrated on what made Sonic such a great game to play in the first place ' speed.
