This layer was created for instructional purposes only and should not be used as an authoritative resource. Now that you have a hosted feature layer with location data and corresponding attributes, you can query and update the data in ArcGIS Online. The CSV file includes columns for the x,y coordinates. ArcGIS used those coordinates to create the points in your layer, so you no longer need to keep the X and Y fields.

The field names that appear in the column headers are what end users see when they're working with features in the layer. If necessary, you can provide names that are more meaningful. Changing the display name of a field doesn't affect the field name stored in the attribute table. You can also create a list of suggested attribute values that users can choose when adding and editing features. The table already contains four unique values for this field Encounter, Sighting, Feeding, and Garbage , so you'll populate the list with these values.

Now when users add a feature, they can choose one of these values from a list instead of typing their own. The pop-up includes the fields and values for the reported coyote activity. You can change the default configuration to control what information the pop-up displays. You'll update the title.

The Visualization settings allow you to configure the feature layer style and filter data to display what users will see when the layer is added to a map. There are many additional editing settings you can configure on the Settings tab. Although you want city staff to edit this layer, you also want the community to contribute, so you'll create multiple views instead.

Hosted feature layer views allow you to publish your feature layer once and create multiple views to meet different viewing and editing requirements. The views reference the same source feature layer so you avoid duplicating data. Otherwise, if you publish multiple copies of the data with unique capabilities for each, you need to merge them periodically in ArcGIS Pro to keep them updated.

Next, to further enhance performance, you will create additional hosted feature layer views by using Feature Definition to only allow relevant editing capabilities and displays for each audience in your group.

You identified three audience needs for your data: public viewing; public contributing; and city staff viewing, contributing, and updating. First, you'll create a view for city staff who need to report coyote activity and see all recent reports. Output data will use the Web Mercator projected coordinate system. Tip: Click Show Credits before you run your analysis to check how many credits will be consumed. The following sections provide additional details about how Extract Data works, including the settings to make layers extractable, exporting data as a CSV, and the option to export from the item page.

For a layer to appear in the list of layers to extract, the layer must be a hosted feature layer, map notes layer, or feature collection. In addition, one of the following statements must be true:. When you export point features to a CSV comma-separated values file, all attribute fields and the x- and y-coordinates of each point are exported. When exporting line and area features to a CSV file, all attribute fields are exported but not the x- and y-coordinates.

This is because line and area features are made of multiple x- and y-coordinates and cannot be represented in a single column in a CSV file. Feature layers are useful when you need to expose vector data for display, query, and editing on the web or when you want to share a table of nonspatial attributes.

Maps, apps, and desktop map viewers can access your services from anywhere on the internet if you choose to allow it. Feature layers are most appropriate for operational layers that go on top of reference layers, such as a basemap. For example, a feature layer may contain information about the street signs in your neighborhood. Each feature street sign may include the sign name, date installed, and a website URL for reporting problems to your local street department.

When you create an empty hosted feature layer, it inherits the visible range of the feature layer or template you used to create it. To change the scale visibility of the hosted feature layer, open the layer in Map Viewer Classic formerly known as Map Viewer and set the visible range , or open it in Map Viewer formerly known as Map Viewer Beta and set the visible range. To complete the steps in the following sections, you must have privileges to publish hosted feature layers and create content.

These services are referred to as hosted feature layers. This is a useful workflow if you do not have any ArcGIS products installed locally. Note: To increase loading and publishing performance, ArcGIS Online reads the values in the first 10 rows of the CSV file to determine the data type and length to display for each field in the New item window. Any string fields with a length less than will be increased to a length of in the hosted feature layer.

If any values on the field exceed , the length of the field in the hosted feature layer is increased. These files do not enforce unique field names, but field names in hosted feature layers must be unique. Therefore, ensure all field names in your file are unique before publishing. CSV files must be formatted and saved as. If the field types can be identified, they are set automatically. You can remove fields, change the display name of the field, and change the field type. By default, date fields are assumed to contain UTC date and time. If your date fields store values that use a different time zone, choose that time zone. Note that the time zone you select is applied to all date fields in the CSV file.

If you later overwrite the hosted feature layer using updated data, the time zone specified when you initially published is used. Tip: You can configure pop-ups to display time.

By default, the locator adds a field that stores the coordinate location for each feature. You can choose to include additional fields that provide you with information related to the geocoding process, such as how closely the location information in your input file matches with a location in the locator service.

Tags are words or short phrases that describe your item and help people find your item when searching. Federal land is considered one tag, while Federal,land is considered two tags.

The data file and the feature layer are separately added to My Content. One way to test the new hosted feature layer once publishing completes is to view it in a map viewer.

Resend an invitation if the member has lost the invitation email or hasn't joined within the time limit members have 14 days to accept an invitation before it expires. Remove the invitation when you no longer want the member to join or you want to reuse the user name you created. You can only resend and remove invitations for organization-specific logins and accounts that members created for themselves.

Note: To resend an invitation to a member you've added directly listed as a current member not yet signed in , delete the member and send a new invitation. For student accounts, you should enter an email address where you want account information to go. For example, you can enter your email address.

The user name cannot be the same as the password. The password is case sensitive and must meet the requirements of your organization. If you use the ArcGIS default policy, the password must be at least eight characters and contain at least one letter and one number. It cannot be the same as the user name. It is temporary, and the member will be prompted to change the password after signing in for the first time. Note: Weak passwords won't be accepted.

The fields can be separated with a comma, semicolon, or tab. Select Add members using their organization-specific IDs without sending invitations and click Next. Fill in the required information for the new member. If it doesn't match, the ArcGIS account will be created but cannot be used.

Create a CSV or text file that contains a header first line with the required fields.
